Indiana Booking Releases by County

Indiana has 92 counties, each with an elected sheriff who runs the county jail and keeps booking release records. Select a county below to find the local sheriff contact, jail address, inmate search tools, and booking record access for that area.

How Indiana County Booking Releases Work

When someone is arrested in Indiana, they are brought to the county jail in the county where the arrest happened. The sheriff's office creates a booking record at intake. This record shows the person's name, date of birth, booking date and time, charges, and bond information. Under Indiana Code 5-14-3-3, the public has the right to inspect and copy these records during regular business hours. No reason is required to request them.

Each Indiana county handles booking records differently. Some counties post their full inmate roster online, updated daily. Others have a basic name search tool on their sheriff website. A few counties do not provide online access and ask that you call the jail or come in person. Under IC 5-14-3-5, law enforcement agencies are required to maintain daily logs that include the defendant's name, age, charges, arrest date and time, arrest location, and case number. These daily logs are public record in Indiana.

Many Indiana counties participate in the Indiana County Jail Public Portal at public.indianajail.gov, a shared statewide database where you can search inmate records across multiple counties at once. Marion County, which covers Indianapolis, uses a separate system at inmateinfo.indy.gov/IML with its own search options including booking number, state ID, and FBI number.

What County Booking Records Contain

A typical Indiana county booking release record contains the person's full legal name, date of birth, booking date and time, the charges filed, bond amount, and sometimes a booking photo. Some counties also show the housing unit where the person is held, the arresting agency, and the next scheduled court date. Booking photos, also called mugshots, are generally public record under Indiana law. Many county jails include them in their online rosters.

Records that are not public include medical and mental health information, Social Security numbers, home addresses, juvenile records, and information about victims under 18 years old. Under IC 5-14-3-4, agencies may withhold these details even when the booking record itself is available. The full text of Indiana's public records law at Indiana Code 5-14-3 explains what is open and what may be restricted.

Searching Booking Releases Across Indiana Counties

Start your search with the county jail portal if you are not sure which county holds the person you are looking for. The Indiana County Jail Portal covers participating counties in one search. For counties not on the portal, go to that county's sheriff website directly. Most sheriff offices list their jail phone number on the site, and you can call to ask about a specific person. The Indiana State Police directory at in.gov/isp/nibrs/nibrs-initiative lists every county sheriff with addresses and phone numbers.

If someone was sentenced and transferred from a county jail to a state prison, use the IDOC Offender Locator at offenderlocator.idoc.in.gov instead. The state Department of Correction maintains a separate database for all 18 adult state prisons. County jails and state prisons do not share records in Indiana.

For free automatic alerts when an inmate's status changes, register with Indiana SAVIN at indianasavin.in.gov. The service covers both county jails and state prisons and sends notifications by phone, email, or text message.
